Charity in Truth: A Moral Compass in Life and Business
In 2011, a conference was held at the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in Rome. There, business leaders and professors from a range of disciplines — from philosophy to management — attempted to interpret Pope Benedict’s 2009 encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” (“Charity in Truth”) specifically in the areas of economic development, commerce, fair and just treatment of people, stewardship of the environment and technology.
Through much hard work and collaboration, what emerged from this conference was a 32 page “handbook”, The Vocation of The Business Leader: A Reflection. This document marked the first time that the Catholic Church affirmed business as a vocation and acknowledged its indispensable role in providing for the common good and promoting human dignity.
